Need help: budget Build List

Post by Ae86Bro »

Hey guys! So this is the deal, I picked up a sweet straight body ae86 for 600 bucks. I will be using this car as a hobby and play toy for the weekends. The car has no engine or trans so I can practically put anything I want in it. I have decided to put a 3tc engine in this baby. I found one on craigslist for $150.

The only problem I am having with my research is the lack of information on the 3tc build. I've seen videos and read through most of the post on this website but there is really no how to or parts list on building up a 3tc, budget or not!

So what I want to do is compile a parts list for noobs/beginners who are starting out with a virgin 3tc. I want to list a budgeted and no holds bar list. The budget list will include a list of parts that people can grab from a junkyard, craigslist or other cars (I.e. Piston heads from a Mazda b2000). Then a list that people can get brand new top of the line parts, a 1000hp beast lol Jo but you get the idea.

So, what would you recommend for an all motor budget build?
A budget turbo build? A all motor all out list? And a turbo all out list?

The more info the better!

So far I've picked up from research on a turbo budget build are:
Mazda b2000 piston heads
Sr20 manifold with t28 turbo
Stock rods
Used megasquirt ecu

And I think that's about it lol need more info!

I think you need to do a little more research on your build. Sounds like you have big aspirations but are new to the engine assembly game.

1. B2200 pistons will not fit a 3tc
2. Sr20 manifold w/t28 turbo will not fit 3tc

Forget your low budget because the cost of fabrication or professional machining of such items to fit is ridiculous and unnecessary.

Congrats on the purchase though.
Good Luck

Thanks for the reply, and sorry for the confusion, as said in prior post, I can't find any good info on a 3tc build.

What is a good setup in 3tc turbo build? If also on a budget. I need a parts list.

Thanks

Try researching wikipedia toyota T series engine. There you can see the different variants of the T series engine and understand why its not that simple to just slap parts together to make a budget build. Honestly, Id focus on getting your T engine to run first. Then you can decide from there where you want to go. Just to reiterate, there is really no cookie cutter list of parts to make the perfect engine. What you do with you engine depends on your application.
Heres a good website for a company that offers lots of products to hop up a T motor. Hope this kickstarts your imagination. Good luck friend.

2 thumbs up for toyota 1515 pic! lol Im a bit confused.... when you say Mazda piston head, what do you mean by that? :? You can use the pistons only or you can use a 3sgte. I would recommend sticking with a 3tc turbo manifold. They are becoming quite popular lately. If you were going turbo why not get a 4age or 4agze, that way its fuel injection ready with ecu if you are on a budget.
Here are my 2 cents. First, you can make this engine go from 90-1000 HP, but then you talk about junk yard parts and a low budget. Just like the engine, I think you are also a virgin when it comes to building them. Lots of people here can help you out with a set up but you really want 3tc parts and engine specs for street and funny car engines? Check online, I bet you can search for 3 weeks about those numbers.
Second, what do you really want to do with the engine? All motor, turbo, budget, engine rebuild...... Is the engine running? Here is a tip for a budget to start with. Really low budget? Upgrade the carb, ignition and fuel system. Low to mid budget? Same thing plus cam, pushrods, valves and springs. Anything other than that you are talking about building an engine. Turbo on a budget? I would say a manifold and run it with a carb up to 8psi.
You can do pretty much anything with these engines, thats why its up to you to pick one. Start looking online at cars and parts to see what it is that you are interested in doing.

Edit: I'm a gunna edit this cos I typed it on my phone earlier and it sounded a lot harsher than I intended...

Nobody told me the SR20 turbo manifold & T28 turbo wouldn't fit the 3tc fortunately...
I didn't bother to ask on a public forum before doing it however...
In my playing with 3tc's I have discovered the SR20 turbo manifolds can be used on the 3tc on BOTH sides of the head. ;) :D You do however need to create a simple adapter plate as only the end two bolt holes on the exhaust side line up. I used 1/2 inch mild steel plate, a hand held power drill, a die grinder (or dremel), a thread tap and a saturday afternoon.

Budget turbo build as per my own experience:
You can use 2jz, 3sgte, B2000, or certain 4g63 pistons on stock 3tc rods.
Regrind cam to around 225 @ 50 on turbo friendly 110+ lobe separation.
Bog stock head with upgraded ebay valve springs is sufficient.
If budget permits arp fasteners are cheap insurance.
Standard head gasket will work - mine was no name ebay.
SR20 factory or ebay stainless turbo header with 2nd hand SR20 turbo - or dedicated 3tc turbo mani if the price is right.
I'm not cluey on the efi options but I know blo thru carb works!
MSD ignition capable of retarding timing under boost is nice. You can of course just work with an old school MSD6 and locked timing but it won't drive as nice off boost.

My results with ONLY water meth for intercooling using the above setup & an upgrade to a Borg Warner S200 turbo were 350+rwhp & others have done much better. :)

I cant give first hand info on a 1000hp 3tc sorry...

As per some of the above comments however none of this is exactly easy or 'bolt on' and needs to be approached carefully and methodically if one is not to instantly reduce the engine to ruins at the hit of boost! Tuning is a school of hard knocks experience thing or pay a professional.

Good luck & don't stop researching!

Cheers,
Jason

Going turbo is kinda hard when on a low budget,,,I have heard of people going turbo with the stock internals ,,blow through ,,and low boost ,, you can get some one to build you a header for a reasonable price,,then comes the turbo ,, intercooler ,, piping ,, gauges ,, msd,, etc. going turbo ain't cheap
