steering column

Ive been told that the position of the steering columns on the 80-81 corollas is different from the 82-83, is this true? looking to install a 83 sr5 steering column in a 81 sedan, i know that i have to notch the firewall since ill be switching to rack n pinion, but is that it , after that will it line up?
