Larger Vented Rotor Big Brake Upgrade for TE72 Corolla TRD:)
I'm have trouble keeping the solid 229mm Frisbees cool enough with over 300 ponies under the hood, so I would like to upgrade my front brakes. It would also look more balanced to go with at least a 250mm rotor up front to match the Nissan Altima rotors I have on the rear.
I'm aware of the AE86 strut/caliper/rotor swap, but:
- Does anyone have experience with this swap as far as decreased brake fade? Between the fact my ride is a fully trimmed wagon with heavier drivetrain (2550lbs) and the increase in power, I have a feeling this swap would be an improvement but still suffer overheating when carving turns.
- Is anyone aware of a behind the hub vented rotor with the 4 on 87mm patten other than the 234mm AE86?
- Is anyone aware of a vented, 4 lug rotor near 250mm that has a shallow height?
- Anyone done something else all together?
Thanks in advance,
-J

I'm running the entire AE86 braking in my AE71... but it is lighter now... around 2200#.
As to more brake... there are a few kits/swaps out there that people have tried. There is, or was a kit for the AE86 that fit inside 15" wheels. There are also Wilwood and other premium brake companies that you can build a new system from........

Thanks oldskewltoy, I ended up making up custom rotor adapter plates and caliper brackets and now have FC RX-7 alum 4-piston calipers and '84 300ZX vented rotors. I believe brake fade is now a thing of the past! I'll post a write up when I get a minute. Thanks for responding.oldeskewltoy wrote:I'm running the entire AE86 braking in my AE71... but it is lighter now... around 2200#.

Re: Larger Vented Rotor Big Brake Upgrade for TE72 Corolla
Okay, so my new brakes are awesome, brake fade is no more!
I figured I'd share what I came up with:
1) Modified stock TE72 caliper brackets (turned some threaded collars, hacked up stock TE72 caliper bracket, tied together with a little metal and a lot of MIG wire)
2) Machined adapter plates to use 1984 Nissan 300ZX 4-lug rotors
3) Modified (for badassery) 2nd Gen RX-7 4-piston alum calipers. Stock would work fine too. Hawk HPS pads.
4) Made 2mm wheel spacers (only needed due to TRD plates, not needed with stock Mazda calipers)
BTW: I'm running 15 x 8 XXR 002's with 0mm offset wheels and clearance is fine.
Here are the results:
Stock: Spacers to center stock Nissan rotors: Modified caliper brackets: To be continued on next post...

A little bling...
JB'd and blended (150, then 400 grit):
Painted and faced on mill:
I found this out the hard way, the raw machined "TRD" aluminum corrodes quite quickly. The solution is easy - just hit them with Hi-Temp clearcoat after the red paint and machining.

Awesome set up
who made the spacer and Trd pieces? I would love to buy a pair

Santos, any machine shop should be able to help you out. Here are the adapter and wheel spacer, I didn't make a print of face plate. The forum won't let me upload the CAD files, so when I get a sec I'll put in Dropbox and post link or something.santos wrote: Awesome set up

Re: Larger Vented Rotor Big Brake Upgrade for TE72 Corolla T
Some evolution has happened since first implementing this upgrade, figured I catch people up.
The Hawk HPS Blue pads ate into the Oreilly's rotors like butter. They had noticeable grooves within months. This made for a VERY aggressive brake feel, which was awesome, but despite trying both another Hawk pad compound (the 5.0) and a Powerstop Ceramic, I could not get some pretty bad brake squeal to go away. I replaced the rotors with Powerstop slotted and now any compound pad has NO noise. These rotors are much harder and are not grooving after much more use (they also don't provide as aggressive of a brake feel, but quiet at least). I found the Hawk 5.0 had the most grab out of the 3 pads compounds I had, so that's what I went with.
Prior to this front brake upgrade I already had replaced the rear drums with a set of used OE 1993 Nissan Altima rear disks and calipers (this was required when I installed the S-10 rear axle - you can find that writeup on here too). Anyway, with the new RX-7, 4-piston calipers up front the bias was such the fronts would lock well before the rears. I recently replaced the rear OE disks and pads with Powerstop slotted and HPS Blue (they don't make 5.0s for Altima rear) and also replaced the non-adjustable stock Toyota brake proportioning valve with a Wilwood 260-11179 (required M10 to 3/8 adapters from Brake Hoses Unlimited) to get the rears to pull harder.
It's now an all around great brake system that can handle any abuse I throw at it.

Re: Larger Vented Rotor Big Brake Upgrade for TE72 Corolla T
The TRD brake setup is FOR SALE! $350 OBO Another $40 to ship them 2-3 day USPS Priority anywhere in U.S.
I had to swap them out for a set of floating (non-opposing) C4 Corvette calipers for better clearance to the new JNC wheels. The sale includes three sets of pads, TRD calipers and custom caliper brackets. To complete the swap you will need to machine adapter plates above, and buy 1984 300ZX non-turbo rotors.
