1976 Corolla 2tc Toyoglide to T40 swap questions

I am a new member on this forum but have been doing quite a bit of research on mods and upgrades for my 1976 Corolla. It has currently the stock 2tc with a 32/36 Weber, and the 3 speed (A30?) transmission. A month ago something started making a terrible noise inside the trans making it hard to engage from park and through the gears. I did a lil checking around and found that the cost might be more than I wanted to pay to rebuild and keep the automatic. So now I have a T40 tranny sitting in my garage that I got for a song. This is what I know I have: T40 with T bell housing, shifter and clutch fork. I know I need the clutch master cylinder, clutch hose, slave cylinder and a clutch. What I do not know is about the drivline splines or length matching up. Also would like to know if any one knows about a flywheel, I have found one with 115 teeth which is said to work on a '78. I do not need a 4-500$ racing flywheel just something to get me done the road. Most auto parts stores want a year/make/model and when I tell them they usually come up with nothing. I know these had manual transmissions and most 3tc stuff will work. Any suggestions or pointers would be greatly appreciated and I will post the pics, procedure and parts as I move forward.

Welcome to the forum!
Any flywheel 79 and earlier will fit perfectly, as long as is from a 2tc, make sure you got the plate that goes betwine engine and tranny that match your bellhousing starter size!

Does that mean definitively that a fly wheel from a 3t or a 2tg will not work? Is this plate that goes between the engine and bell housing present on the automatic transmission and if so can it be modified to work?

No it does not mean that, thing is some 3tc/2tg comes with a 220mm flywheel and you will need the clutch and pressure plate for it, and no Auto tranny cars did not comes with that plate,

The automatic plate and starter will work as long as it matches the bell housing of the trans you have. The only difference in the plates is that the auto has a plastic cover to remove the torque convertor bolts. 75 to 80 has the small starter. 81/82 has the big starter with the square input shaft cover. 71 to 74 also has the big starter but the bottom starter hole is threaded. 3tc trannys have the shifter further back then the 2tc's. 71 to 81 is 20 spline output and 82 up is 22 spline.
So there are 2 different shifters, 2 different sized starter plates, 3 different starters, 3 different forks and the slaves have to match the fork and 2 different driveshaft yokes. The auto yoke wont work, too big. You will also need a manual trans x-member and dont forget to install the pilot bearing in crank. All starters are compatible with the T flywheels but there are 3 different size clutches.

Here are some pictures of the T40 I have with its bell housing. Also with the fork, which looks like the middle one in your picture. What did that come from?

I have also found this 115 tooth flywheel on ebay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Standard-Flywhe ... 79&vxp=mtr and would like anyones thoughts on if it will work also found a NAPA flywheel with 115 teeth that may work but it is not specifically for a 76 Corolla but may be for other models using the 2tc with T40 tranny. Their P/n is: NCF 88148 Any thoughts?

That fork is off a TE2X. Hard to see in pic but the bottom bolt for the starter should be threaded on the bell, if so then you need a 71-74 starter and a large starter plate (71-74 or 81/82 auto or manual will work). Yours should be small on your 76 if original. The slave also has to be 71-74 but the master 76. The ebay flywheel looks to be correct but the napa flywheel is for 22R, definitely wont work. The only thing that worries me about the ebay flywheel is how they can sell a new flywheel that cheap with free shipping. Look up flywheel explosions on youtube and you will see what I mean. I would go with OEM.

most of the ebay sales are do to either due to deep sales or the parts are no longer being made.

Does anyone know a auto part store part number for a flywheel that will work. I am having a hell of a time eeking any info out of their websites. Just an oem will work fine. Can't see spending $3-500 on some fancy one for a daily
