I used to own a 74 sprinter. No catalytic converters were installed as far as I know.
According to what I found online "Catalytic converters were first widely introduced in American production cars in 1975 due to EPA regulations on toxic reductions. The United States Clean Air Act required a 75% decrease in emissions in all new model vehicles after 1975."
Hope this helps.

No cat? I'm going to have to take a look under my 74 te27. I do know that it has a smog pump, but California is special when it comes to emissions. I know that my 74 civic has no cat.

Thats a central resonator friend. It prevents unwanted vibrations and booming in the cabin of the car caused by exhaust pulses.

Resonators are usually double walled cylinders packed with a sound dampening material or even baffled.
Catalytic converters are usually covered in heat shields as they operate under high temperatures.

hope this helps.

thanks for the info. very helpful. the reason i want to know is because the series i am planning on racing in requires that if the car came with a cat then it is necessary to use one. if no cat was installed from the factory then it is not necessary. i didnt think it came with one i just wanted to get more confirmation thanks

Yup, that's a resonator. The first usage of a catalytic converter was for the 1975 TE31 Corollas in California (TE31s outside california didn't have them). Pre-75 has no cat.
