bottom bearings for 3tg turbo race engine?

Post by AE25 » Tue Mar 03, 2015 6:51 am

Which bearings are going to last in a track car with 250rwkw 3t-gte. (same parts for 3tc turbo).
Currently bearings are lasting 3 to 4 meets.
Thanks in advance.

Hi there mate,
That will be a set which are not being tortured, but before I make a blanket statement about the tune of the engine can you give some more information on how the bearings are failing?
Any pics?
Bearings usually fail from direct contact with rotating metal i.e. detonation hammering the rod into the crank, oil pressure or lack thereof failing to keep bearing & rotating metal separated, oil contamination or overheating till it has no lubricity left... Etc etc...

There is not a lot of magic separating brand A & X when it comes to bearings.

What kind of racing are you doing & do you have a ride thread??

Cheers,
Jason

It is a friend that races a te71 levin in the nzgt series of gtrnz. He mentioned he was going to try something else, so im curious what other racers prefer to use. he's tried STL and NDC bearings which are common brands here and usually fine in street cars.
I"ll find out more of the failures he's having. afaik the 3tgte oil system is unmodified apart from oil cooler and a winged sump.
and as to tune, id imagine it to be pretty well sorted. Hes raced for years and currently leading his series i think. has had a few dyno tunes that i know of.
The build from memory: T3/T4 turbo on custom manif, 2tgeu head and intake with evo 60mm throttle and reground cams, forged pistons/rods. crank angle sensor with sequential fuel/ignition on link g4 ecu.

That's a sweet looking ride!

The potential for conditions being different during a track session vs a dyno tune session is pretty good. Heat soak can change the onset of detonation, however I wonder if it may also be that the suspension tune & driver skills have outgrown the oiling system... Pulling serious G's makes the oil go all kinds of places it wont 'normally' go i.e. away from oil pickup points. High RPM on track & the slightest hesitation in the oil supply will cause instant damage.

I am only posing a few scenarios in case there is something which may have been overlooked. Better bearings will not fix a split second nil oil supply issue any more than forged pistons will prevent nissan owners blowing up RB25's attempting high boost fitted with malpasi 7:1 rising rate regulator & no other mods. :-\

Cheers,
Jason

lol yeah could quite possibly be a momentary oil loss issue. He's got extensive baffling inside the sump he says and he's never seen the warning light go off. (high stop light on the dash).
so what would be considered good oil pressure at mid corner at 6500rpms? He's gona setup a vid cam at the oil gauge :)

What oil pump are you using ?
Are the baffle modification to the oil pan shelves done properly ?
Might be an oil flow issue !

Single stage external oilpump maybe ?

will find out if oil flow is an issue when he races next.
