So i drove it quite a bit with the new alternator without replacing the voltage reg. Would using a bad voltage regulator cause it to go bad?

I replaced the voltage reg and it charges fine but now when I turn the car off the CHG light stays on. If I leave the battery plugged in too long it will be dead. apparently when the light is on in this instance something is drawing on the battery when it shouldnt be. Any ideas?
