It's common to have ringland failures with the stock 3sgte pistons. My 91 mr2 with a perfectly dyno tuned engine cracked one at 16psi. Did some research, and lots of others have had the same problem.

Pistons are like a lot of other engine components...

Standard parts can take a decent amount of horsepower and not much abuse i.e. detonation.
Forged parts can take a lot of power and a little abuse...

My 3SGE Beams stock pistons took around 380rwhp at 38psi boost. I heard detonation on numerous occasions as I pushed the tune. I melted the tip off spark plugs on several occasions. The ringlands were still fine after I hydraulic locked the engine at large load... Mikealike above mentioned he has made 400hp with 3SGTE pistons (I assume factory stock).

I don't know how much HP 16psi is on a 3SGTE but on a forgiving low compression 3TC they make plenty of power for our dinosaurs for most of us! :D

How much can the stock 3tc pistons handle?

I havn't personally played with stock 3TC pistons but Hurricane (Dan) has run a high mileage stocker with EFI and 20psi+ boost and it just kept going like the energiser bunny... I'd hazard a guess that would have been showing 250+rwhp... :?: Im basing my guess on my own 270rwhp at 22psi with 3SGE Beams pistons so his may have been somewhere in that vicinity or better. :?:

With 3SGTE pistons the 3TC is likely around 6.7:1 compression so is a super forgiving beast to tune until you are really giving it some major boost. :)

Comparison with boost levels we can/do use on the 3TC 2 valve engine is not useful with a modern multivalve 3SGTE however. What power does 16psi give on one of them? Is it around 300-330rwhp?

Cheers,
Jason

Maybe on a really happy dyno or with a built engine. More in the 240-260 range with limited mods.

I see figures of 240hp and even up to 400hp is this all done on stock 3tc rods or are you guys using aftermarket rods?

My figures were done on stock 3TC rods.
They are extremely short so that probably helps with strength! :-)
