79 Corolla with a 12a rotary swap

Post by Louaustin »

What's up guys, just got ahold of a 79 corolla with a 12a swap. Looking to upgrade suspension and brakes and have been having a hard time finding info. Looking for any ideas and tips to this car and swap combo.

Hi louaustin,
If it's a te31 chassis then the front is quite easily upgraded to aftermarket ae86 strut/brake combos. (techno toy tuning sell a bunch of stuff). If it's a ke30 chassis and you're fitting ae86 strut, you'll also need to address the steering knuckle because the bolt spacing is different, 87mm instead of 85mm on the te/ae suspension. (Use te3# knuckles).

If you already have the 6.7" T code diff then there are online guides to how to convert to disk brake. search for "toyota T series drum to disk conversion" or similar, hopefully finds the info. Or if wanting to upgrade to a bigger size (6.7" is the largest factory fitted diff in this chassis), the next size up in toyota diffs with LSD available is the 7.5" F code. Most suitable is a ma46 mk1 supra with disk brakes, although getting hard to find. need to swap mounts over to suit leaf spring amongst other things.
